Dr. Nathan Butzen is a Licensed Psychologist and Director of Clinical Services for The Summit Counseling Center. He also serves as a Clinical Psychologist with the 5th Medical Brigade in the U.S. Army Reserves. Prior to joining the Summit, Dr. Nathan was the Clinical Director for The Georgia Collaborative ASO, a division of Beacon Health Options.
Dr. Nathan utilizes an interactive counseling approach informed by Family Systems that invites children, teenagers, adults, and families to be active participants in the process of growth and change. This style of therapy can change the recurring, negative patterns that damage personal relationships and prevent individuals and families from reaching their goals. Dr. Nathan’s clients find therapy to be a collaborative, engaging, and productive process that challenges them to find creative solutions to their problems in living. His therapeutic approach values each person’s identity, beliefs, religion, spirituality and cultural background. His training specifically prepared him to help individuals who want to integrate their religion and/or spirituality into treatment.
Some areas of expertise for Dr. Nathan include working with anxiety, depression, suicidality, men’s issues, family conflict, sibling rivalry, family separation and divorce, grief and loss, sexual difficulties, anger management, poor social skills, interpersonal relationships, coping with ADHD, coping with health problems, military and veteran mental health, and reactions to traumatic life events.
For the past 15 years, Dr. Nathan has been involved with the delivery of mental health services in Georgia and Virginia, providing assessment, therapy, supervision, and program oversight. He studied Psychology and Spanish at Berry College in Rome, Georgia, and completed his master’s and doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Regent University in Virginia. Dr. Nathan matched to Eastern Virginia Medical School for his predoctoral internship, and he completed his postdoctoral fellowship with two pioneers in the field of Family Therapy, Dr. Steve Greenstein and Dr. David Waters.
