DREAM Diversity Workshop

“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”

— Martin Luther King, Jr.

Developing a Sense of Identity

Theme – Who am I, where do I come from, how do I show that identity to others?

Focus – Helping participants gain a sense of their own identity in terms of race, culture, gender, and sexual orientation. Knowing better the various facets of one’s self that makes that person unique as well as blend in with others for a sense of belonging while understanding that some identities come with complicated perspectives.

Recognizing the Importance of Diversity

Theme – This is how I view myself, and others view themselves differently, and that’s okay.

Focus – Helping participants be aware of the beauty of diversity while also having an increased awareness of its complications with stereotypes and assumptions that thwarts the potential true diversity.

Ensuring Justice Through a Better Understanding of Injustice

Theme – Moving beyond individualized experiences with identity and diversity, and better understanding collective complications of identity and diversity.

Focus – Helping participants come to grips with having improved identity and greater appreciation of diversity, but there still being systemic injustices for certain groups through historic tragedies and even current events.

Acting to Implement Change and Making an Impact on a Local Level

Theme – Ways of feeling empowered to enact change in oneself, one’s family, one’s business/school, and one’s community.

Focus – Providing solution-focused strategies using each participant’s strengths (found in the Identity section) to use the information given in the workshop and present to others in their own unique, empowered style.
