“Relationships are the agents of change and the most powerful therapy is human love.” – Bruce D. Perry

Alicia believes that at the core of every human being is the desire for genuineness and authentic connection. This credo informs her entire practice, from the very first session. When meeting with clients, Alicia encourages honesty and openness, whether it be tears or laughter. She believes that real change occurs within these genuine actions. Alicia is committed to appreciating the diversity and individuality in each person. She takes a collaborative, person-centered approach throughout the entire therapeutic process. Although her primary orientation is Emotionally Focused Therapy, Alicia also integrates narrative, play, and art therapy.

Alicia received her Bachelor of Arts from Kent State University, majoring in Psychology with minors in Human Sexuality and Political Science. Alicia then graduated with her Master’s degree from the University of Akron’s School of Counseling, with a focus on Marriage and Family Therapy. During that time, Alicia was a member of the first cohort of the Opioid Workforce Expansion Interdisciplinary Training Initiative, a program focused on providing enhanced education for clinicians regarding Opioid Use Disorder and its effects on both personal and relational levels. Alicia also worked at the University of Akron Clinic for Individual and Family Clinic, treating couples, clients of the LGBTQ population, and offering anger management. Most recently, Alicia worked in community-based counseling. This experience brought Alicia into contact with families, children, and older individuals from a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, and religious identities. These clients presented with a number of mental health concerns including trauma, depression, grief, suicidality, and anxiety, along with family and sexuality issues.

Alicia has been traveling since she was six months old, thus beginning a lifelong passion. Alicia also enjoys dancing and attending professional sports games, including basketball, baseball, soccer, and hockey. When Alicia is at home, her hobbies include watching and reviewing films, painting, and crafting.

Alicia Ortega is under the directed experience and clinical supervision of Nathan Butzen, Psy.D.
