Licensed Professional Counselor
Staff Therapist

“Yesterday is beyond the horizon, tomorrow is a day too far away but today is here and now and today, we can make it better.”

Shirma provides individual, group, and family therapy for both adolescents and adults within school, office, and virtual settings. Shirma has extensive training and over four years experience as a Brief Strategic Family Therapist (BSFT).

As a Licensed Professional Counselor, it is Shirma’s goal to help individuals and families identify areas for positive growth and change in their lives. Her approach is holistic where a variety of modalities are used including cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness techniques, positive psychology, psychodynamic therapy, brief strategic family therapy (BSFT), family systems theory, humanistic therapy, and others.

Shirma has worked with a diverse group of clients and her background (both professional and personal) has allowed her a solid understanding and sensitivity to those navigating cultural differences (whether born within or outside of the US). Shirma knows that life can be filled with challenges and obstacles. The world as we know it has changed and it is important for clients to feel acknowledged and supported when seeking answers. It is Shirma’s goal to be a source of support and understanding for those who are looking for clarity, harmony, balance, and overall life improvement.

Shirma received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Clark Atlanta University. She worked within the corporate field for over fifteen years and felt called to return to the mental health field. Shirma then obtained her Master’s degree from Grand Canyon University. Shirma has worked in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric hospital settings and community health settings with adolescents and adults, outpatient substance use and addiction, provided BSFT family therapy for the juvenile court, and worked in both private and public school settings as a school-based therapist.

Shirma was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and grew up in the Miami area. She is married and has a fourteen-year-old daughter and a mini Labradoodle named Charlie. She enjoys traveling, reading, writing poetry, listening to music, long walks outdoors in nature, and spending time with her family and friends.
