Skills to Help Students Prosper

Listed below are tips to help students of all ages whether they are struggling managing schedules, ADHD symptoms, anxious thoughts, depressive symptoms, or just in need of extra support and guidance. Applying skills does not always have to be in conjunction with a challenge but can be implemented to start developing healthy practices to be proactive.

  • Practice gratitude.
  • Take challenges in small steps toward stepping outside of comfort zone. For example, if there is nervousness about ordering food, practice here and there ordering when going out.
  • Improve organization. Use a planner, create a visual appealing checklist, take small breaks (to move around or get a snack), create designated places for things, and have a routine.
  • Journaling can be great to tackle emotions and thoughts so that they are not replaying in your head.
  • Practice calming down strategies as part of routine. This could be things like deep breathing, naming things you can hear, taste, smell, see, and touch, and remembering successes.
  • Build flexible thinking skills. Practice seeing alternative ways to handle situations if one way does not work.
  • Use Encouragement. Encouragement can be helpful to use when mistakes happen. Receiving encouragement and praise when completing tasks or starting them can help kids be more successful in completing them.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities.
