Kids and teens are still building their sense of identity and safety in the world. When a major life change occurs like moving, changing schools, divorce, a new sibling, or even graduation to middle or high school, it can feel like their whole foundation is shaking. While adults may see these transitions as normal or even exciting, young people often experience them as stressful, confusing, and emotionally overwhelming.
Children may act out, become clingy, struggle with sleep, or complain of stomachaches. Teens might pull away, have mood swings, or feel anxious and unmotivated. These behaviors aren’t just “bad attitudes,” but they are signs of a nervous system trying to make sense of new, unpredictable times. What they need most during these times is predictability, connection, and validation. When we slow down, listen, and support them through the change, we help them build resilience for future transitions too.
